Less than $5 Pre-K Other (Music) Resources

Steady Beat is one of the cornerstones of early childhood music whether you are playing with your Pre-K, Kindergarten, or even First Graders. Have them rise up to the challenge of “Steady as you go!” an amalgamation of classical music designed to have students become steady beat MASTERS!

You will assign students to play either body percussion to show steady beat (head, shoulder, lap, feet, etc) or even a drum, auxiliary percussion instrument, or anything else you can find.

You will then play the audio example of various pieces of classical music by clicking on the “heart” and watch the kids try to find the steady beat – only to be interrupted as the music abruptly changes every 20 to 30 seconds!

Students will have to start over and find the steady beat again as they transition into the next piece.

Have a terrific time finding that beat!

Use this song with lyrics written to the melody for "12 Days of Christmas", to welcome your students as well as to discuss procedures and expectations in the classroom. If you choose to perform it, please give credit to me for the lyrics, since the melody is in public domain and can be used freely. Enjoy this song to welcome your young elementary learners!

Your Kindergarteners and 1st Graders may understand high and low (although they may think it's loud and soft, but this is why we teach them), but can they identify it which way it travels through non-traditional notation?

In "Up, Down, All Around!", your students get a brief introduction of melody, the most important aspect of a song or piece and will venture into the lesson where they will learn to identify melodic direction.

They will be given a multiple choice selection of 3 answers and then asked to identify which answer is UP, DOWN, or is a melody that STAYS THE SAME. Advance the slide and the correct answer will illuminate green!

You can play this one of several ways
_

• Individually by calling students to the board and pointing to the correct answer
• As a class by having them write down the answer on a white board, holding up an answer paddle, etc
• Race each other to the board to press the answer first and assign points (Team A vs Team B)
• Tell the students they have to beat a certain score of right answers (Oh, Mrs. so-and-so's class got 8 of them right, can you beat it?), and then play with one of the methods above!

Play some classical music in the background, and you have a win-win!

Use this new book which was published this year to practice and review ta and ti-ti rhythms! Start out by discussing with students their good and bad days, and then read the story. Use the chant to practice and reinforce steady beat and rhythm. Then, use the visual chart to decode for those rhythms. Add in small percussion instruments if you desire, to make this more fun! Use for grades PreK-2.

Working with your kinders and first graders on high and low pitches? Got a little bit of space in your classroom? WIth Hi-Low Rally Race, you can put two hula hoops (or taped off areas) in your classroom and designate one a "high" area and a "low" era.

You will play a short example of a melody (8 examples included) that's pitched high or low and students will walk "briskly" :) to the corresponding area which they think the pitch is -- high or low

You then advance the slide and show the correct answer!

Also works well for Distance Learning if your district has applied that. Just upload it to your Google Classroom and have the kids self pace it at home

Use the chant or lullaby to help the bear feel better! Chant or sing this extension to the popular book "Bear Feels Sick" by Karma Wilson. Talk to the children prior to starting about what being a caring and good friend means and that friends help each other when they are sick. Then introduce the chant or song to the children and sing after every time that the says the bear feels sick. Use the rhythm chart to decode the rhythms and discover quarter rests. Use the song to listen and decode for the do solfege syllable. Adaptable for PreK-2nd grade.

A terrific way to work on soft and loud is with a quick review with our dynamic duo in music, Piano and Forte.

Students will review dynamics in music and watch a short video from Music K8 called "Forte Piano" with the Barnyard Orchestra!

They will then listen to 10 different examples of music (clips that range from 15-30 seconds long) and choose whether they think the music played best fits the term "Piano" or "Forte" by clicking on the screen.

The right answer will illuminate green the next slide.

Great practice for your young ones to begin the year (if you're distance learning) or good general review

Come along on a beautiful journey with this extension lesson! Use this lesson to practice solfege syllables so, mi and la with your students as you read through the book. Use one song for the first part of the book, and a second song for the second part when the animals start leaving the journey. Use with grades PreK-2nd grade.

Use this lesson to have the children comfort the bear that the tooth will come out! Based on this popular book, have the children chant or sing to a bear puppet that it will all be okay. Use the accompanying rhythm and beat charts to differentiate between rhythm and steady beat. Accompanying worksheet should be used to have students notate the rhythms to reinforce their decoding skills. Have the older students in grades 1 and 2 sing the chant on so, mi and la syllables. Use the sung version of the chant to introduce or reinforce the la syllable. Adaptable for grades PreK-2nd grade with worksheets that can be assigned digitally through Easel.

Get your class on beat! Included are 6 background tracks with ethnic flair -- tablas, djembes, bongos, and more ethnic percussion from Asia, India, and South America. The 6 tracks are at approximately 120bpm and also have a faster 142bpm just in case you want to get things really moving! (12 tracks total) I use these in my class for Orff, Boomwhacker, Rhythm Sticks, Dancing, Movement, or singing activities. Teach your students to identify and listen for the quarter rest with the chant written specifically for this book! Chant at specific points in the book when the bear keeps snoring despite all the activity around the animal. Decode the chant afterwards and ask your students what the "shh" represents. Use the decoding worksheet with the older grades (1st-2nd) to reinforce quarter notes, eighth notes and quarter rest. Use a bear puppet that children can chant to for more engagement.
