6 File Folder Games

File folder games allow students opportunities to learn to through play. Communication and appropriate interactions are important skills they will need throughout life.

This set provides 6 different activities, however they each follow the same general rules, expectations, and idea. I use this with my kiddos that need practice turn taking, losing (students may lose a desired game piece), cooperation, following directions, matching and so much more. The games are easy in nature, however highly addictive for the competitive kids. This allows for opportunities with students in differing abilities.

The themes for the games are:

Fill the Wagon

Make a cake

Buggy Day

Laundry

Moon Walk

Ice Cream

Rules (some differences in games - this example is the Fill the wagon rules).

Contents & Prep:

• Print/Laminate 1 mat per person, use a expo marker to personalize wagons.  Each player will collect their items in their wagon.
• Print and laminate 4 dogs, 4 flowers, 4 ice cream, 4 bubbles, 1 book, 1 leaf pile - place them in the middle of the game board. 
• Print the game board and glue/laminate to a file folder
• Print and prepare dice (or use your own dice)

*For easy storage of game pieces attach an envelope to the back of the file folder prior to lamination.  Make a small slice in the lamination to release the top of the envelope.  Attach velcro to close.  

Object:  Be the first to collect all the items except the leaf pile in your wagon.   If you have the books or the leaf pile and someone else lands on it you have to give it to the other player.  

Choose your player:  Once you have chosen your player, place them on the board any spot will do!

Directions:  

1. Roll the dice and move your player.
2. Collect the pieces as you go and place them in your wagon.   You may only get one of each item!  
3. The first person to collect 1 dog, 1 flower, 1 ice cream, 1 bubble and the books wins!

In this lesson, students identify leadership traits by researching leaders throughout history. They are provided with links to resources to help them research three individuals of their choice from three different time periods in history. Lists of leaders from each time period are provided to help them choose. Then, they use that information along with graphics, pictures and backgrounds from the Internet to create a finished presentation that explains the qualities of each leader, the similarities and differences, and add their own opinions and insights to the project as they learn how to apply leadership skills in their own life.

Two versions of instructions are provided to allow the lesson to be done individually or in small groups or partners. Projects can be presented in class or included on a website for viewing.

This is an excellent creative project to add to a unit in a career class, leadership class or to support a history/social studies unit. The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with upper elementary or high school students.

Memories from the Year (video project) gives students an opportunity to share their memories from the school year as a culminating activity to the year. It uses the Web 2.0 tool, WeVideo, which is convenient for teachers and students since it does not require download. Students use existing pictures and videos or shoot additional ones and then combine those with WeVideo’s built in music to create a video retrospective of the year. The project was created for 7th and 8th graders but could easily be adapted to use with upper elementary through early high school.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

The “Qualities of a Hero” project focuses on recognizing important values in everyday life and individuals. It also allows students to creatively utilize technology to express their ideas. Students start the project with a whole class discussion on heroism, which can include video presentations (see the teacher resources). They work with a team to identify and classify different individuals who might be considered heroes. An additional organizer is included to extend this activity to identifying hero qualities with their group, or the organizer can be used later in the individual lesson. Finally, students research a hero of choice and create an online poster which also includes the qualities they identified incorporated into a Wordle word-web collage.

This lesson was created to use for Patriot Day 9/11 to showcase how a disaster can bring out the best in people who react as heroes, but is a great lesson on values for anytime!

In this lesson, students learn about Red Ribbon Week as they complete a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. A complete answer key is provided for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. Setting SMART Goals is a lesson that helps students identify and plan goals for school or their personal life by utilizing the SMART method of goal planning (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely). This is a great lesson to start off a new semester or a new year.

In these lessons, students are provided with an introduction to the goals methodology and suggested resources for whole class activities are included to introduce the lessons. Next, students brainstorm with a small group and then work individually to craft their own individual goal. In this lesson, students learn about influential leaders from the 20th century and their work. Students choose an individual of interest (on their own or from a provided list) and then research specific information about them, creating a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides or using a Web 2.0 tool. Teacher and student resources are provided for the lesson, along with full instructions and project expectation, including a grading rubric. A list of famous people from the 20th Century is included separately for student choice (or students can choose an individual of interest on their own). This list is also included as a sign-up sheet in case the teacher wants each student to do a different person. Two versions of the lesson are included to let teachers decide if they prefer to have students use the more traditional presentation tools of Microsoft Office or Google Slides or, if they prefer to give students a choice of those and various free Web 2.0 tools such as Prezi, eMaze, or Canva. Links for tutorials are provided for all suggested software choices in the student resources.
