Engineering Ethics - Exploring Case Studies
By Innovations in Technology
This career unit gives students an introduction to the engineering ethics using a variety of case studies for student analysis. This is perfect for middle school or high school engineering, career, technology, CTE or business classes.
The included PowerPoint presentation can be used by the teacher for whole class instruction, or provided to the students electronically (or as a printout) for them to review individually. Students work with a partner or in small groups to analyze engineering cases that dealt with ethical concerns. Resources for the six cases are included in the PowerPoint and as printable or digital task cards. The activity can be completed on the computer or without computer access if the teacher prefers by printing out the linked information. Students use critical thinking skills and teamwork to research and analyze the cases and then answer questions to consider the different ethical issues and choices. Then, each group shares that information with the class, encouraging further discussion and analysis. Finally, a short reflection questionnaire gives students the opportunity to reflect and analyze their learning more deeply as they consider the input from other groups and their insight on different case studies.
The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with high school students.
Files Included with this Lesson
• Teacher & Student Resources
• Introduction to Engineering Ethics PowerPoint presentation (editable)
• Case Study Team Project Instructions, Expectations and Grading Rubric
• Team Case Study Questions/Worksheet
• Case Study Task Cards (6 different cases)

Ramps Science Unit for Preschool and Kindergarten (Simple Machines)
By Joyful Explorations
Students will use balls, cars and other objects on ramps as they consider the question, "What affects the way an object rolls down a ramp?" This packet supports the Next Generation Science Standards.
The “Science Kids” series is intended to help teachers implement developmentally appropriate, hands-on science activities for children in Preschool, Kindergarten and the early grades. The activities in these packets are based on the scientific method and encourage inquiry-based learning. All activities can be differentiated to meet the needs of your students.
Concepts in this Unit:
*Some objects roll down ramps, while others slide.
*The height or texture of a ramp will change the distance and speed an object rolls.
*Changing the weight of an object will change the distance and speed it rolls down a ramp.
*An object will move around obstacles that are in its way as it rolls down a ramp
Investigations include:
*"Does it Roll or Slide?"
*"Does Height Make a Difference?"
*"Bumpy Ramps"
*"Heavy and Light"
*"Obstacles"
Printable "Prediction" and "What Really Happened?" sheets are included for many of these investigations.
Also included is a "Just for Fun" ramps art activity.
The final project in this packet is a "Design Your Own Ramp" activity with printable planning sheets and suggestions for ways that students can share their projects with their peers and others.
STEM Challenges for Preschool, Kindergarten and the Early Grades
By Joyful Explorations
These 10 STEM challenges will motivate your students to come up with innovative and creative solutions as they are increasing their science and math skills. These STEM activities are most appropriate for children in Kindergarten-2nd Grade, but can be used in Preschool with the support of an adult.
► "Egg Drop"
► "Deliver a Message"
► "Bird Beak"
► "Floating Pennies"
► "Cross the River"
► "Marshmallow Tower"
► "Marble Roller Coaster"
► "Newspaper House"
► "Magnet Fish"
► "Pom Pom Launcher"
All of the activities in this packet follow a 5-step process:
Introduction- This is the part of the lesson where the teacher defines the challenge and the students begin to brainstorm solutions. There are no right or wrong answers during this part of the lesson.
Planning- Students work together (usually with a partner or in a small group) to come up with a potential solution for the challenge.
Construction- This is the building stage!
Testing- The students test their designs to see if they have solved the problem, and met the challenge.
Evaluation- The students critique their designs and think about what they might change.
Mobile Apps - Research and Design Your Own App | Distance Learning
By Innovations in Technology
Students love their phones and all the apps that are available for them! This lesson lets students research some of the most popular apps and learn more about the software engineers who created them, and then create an app of their own. A Microsoft PowerPoint presentation starts the lesson as students learn about how apps are designed. Next, students work individually, with a partner, or in small groups to research an assigned app and create a presentation in their choice of software (suggestions and web tutorials are included). Next, students present their findings to the class. Finally, students work together to create their own app, using App Inventor (free software from MIT). Links to teacher instructions for App Inventor set up (provided by MIT) are included in the provided teacher resources below. All files are fully editable, allowing the teacher to customize the lessons. Additional resources and extension lesson ideas include free sites for students to create their own mobile app.
Perfect for a technology, engineering, or business class, this project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be adapted for older students.
This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.
Files Included with this Lesson
• Teacher & Student Notes and Resources
• Introduction to App Design & Creation PowerPoint Presentation (fully editable)
• App List for Assignment (fully editable in MS Word)
