Common Core Alignment:

✏️CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.3 I can know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

✏️CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.3 I can decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

✏️CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.3A I can know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs.

✏️CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.3.B : I can associate the long sounds with the common spelling for the five major vowels.

✏️CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.3.C: I can know final -e for representing long vowel sounds.

✏️CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.2.3.A: I can distinguish long vowels when reading one-syllable words.

How it Works:

  1. Students may start at ANY card with their pencil and paper on a clipboard. If this is too much to carry: Adjust the activity, by “hiding” the cards around the classroom writing surfaces such as tables and desks and have a pencil at each station.
  2. Write the number of the starting card in the top left square.
  3. Look at the picture, say what it is and think about what letters spell the digraph sound.
  4. Walk around the room searching for the match to the picture located in the oval in the top right of another card.
  5. When found, write the answer on the line in the first box.
  6. Following the arrow on their paper to box 2, write the number of this card in the box on the top left.
  7. Repeat until all boxes are full. Students should return to starting card when completed.

You will LOVE it because:

Teachers will love how easy this scavenger hunt is to set up and how versatile it is—use it for independent practice, centers, or whole group activities. It’s aligned with a trusted phonics curriculum and provides a great way to assess students’ understanding. Plus, the built-in movement keeps students engaged and focused, making phonics practice more fun!

Students will love the excitement of searching for the right answers while moving around the room. The matching activity encourages them to think critically about phonics and fine-tune their motor skills, making learning feel like a game.

Who This Product is For:

  • Late Kindergarten through 2nd-grade teachers looking for engaging phonics activities.
  • Teachers seeking a UFLI-aligned, not endorsed by, simply introduced in the same sequence, resource to support phonics instruction.
  • Educators needing fun, low-prep activities for independent centers or small groups.
