Geography: Central America Tic-Tac-Toe Activity (middle and high school)

By Geography & Math Made Easy

This lesson comes with a zip file that includes:

(1) a PDF of the lesson

(2) The original Tic-Tac-Toe Student Activity Word file. The buyer is given permission to change the questions on the Tic-Tac-Toe Student Activity Word file to meet the objectives of the lesson.

Note: based on your computer and the version of your Word program the formatting of the Word file may off and not as originally created. This is why TeachShare encourages sellers to only provide the lesson in PDF form.

Need a new way to have students to research South America? Put a little twist in the lesson. Have students play Tic-Tac-Toe while learning about South America.

This lesson will not only give students autonomy and choices in what they learn, but will also create a fun way to have students complete research on South American government, economics, geography, and culture.

Students will receive a Tic-Tac-Toe board with multiple questions, 2 per square. Students will choose one question or activity from each Tic-Tac-Toe square to form a Tic-Tac-Toe horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. You may have students complete up to two Tic-Tac-Toe without answering the same question twice. If time is limited, you may shorten the lesson by having students complete only one Tic-Tac-Toe.

Students may work individually or with a partner to complete the research assignment.

This lesson includes:

°Suggestion for South America Introductory Videos

°Listening Activity

°South America Tic-Tac-Toe Activity

°Collaborative Closure Activity through Student Self-Assessment

°Suggested Instructor Assessment

°Reproducibles for graphic organizers required through assignment

°Teacher Assessment Guide/Key

... And More

Sample Questions:

°What is NAFTA? How has it affected the people of Mexico? Do you think NAFTA has been good or bad for the people in border cities of the United States? Explain your answer.

°Even before Europeans “discovered” the new world there were advanced civilizations in the Americas: Incas, Olmecs, Mayas, and Aztecs. List the cultural characteristics of each, what they are famous for, and how they still influence the world today.

° Create a Venn diagram comparing Central America and the West Indies.

° Create a stamp reflecting the blend of culture in Central America (Native American, African, and European)

° What challenges does Mexico face today as a result of its expanding population? Propose a solution to one of the challenges they face.

Note: This is a higher-level thinking activity that requires students to not only research the answers to the questions but compare and contrast, create, explain, etc.

New York State Geography Escape Room (No Prep!)

By Miss Yous Clues and Resources

Looking for an exciting way to teach your students about soils and weathering? This New York State Escape Room is the perfect blend of social studies content, close reading, and gamified learning! In this activity, students will explore the geography of New York State including cities, landmarks, and state/country/body of water borders through an engaging close reading article and four unique challenges.

Overview of the Activity: Students begin by reading a two-page informational passage about New York state geography, borders, cities, important landmarks within the state, etc.. The article includes essential vocabulary like state, city, lake, country, border, river and mountain, providing a solid foundation for students before they tackle the four interactive challenges.

Each challenge targets a different skill:

  • Challenge 1: Matching vocabulary terms to their definitions (reinforcing social studies concepts).
  • Challenge 2: True/false questions based on key facts from the reading (to build comprehension).
  • Challenge 3: Multiple-choice questions (testing understanding of key concepts).
  • Challenge 4: Identifying the paragraph where certain information is found (developing close reading skills).

For each correct answer, students receive a clue—a one-digit number. After completing all four challenges, students use their numbers to solve a final puzzle and “escape” the room.

**Why Use Close Reading?:**Close reading is an instructional approach that encourages students to carefully analyze and interpret a text. In this escape room, students must return to the passage multiple times to find the answers to the questions, helping them:

  • Improve their reading comprehension.
  • Strengthen critical thinking skills.
  • Become more independent readers who can tackle complex information.

Benefits of Gamified Learning: Using an escape room format transforms a traditional lesson into an adventure! Students love the thrill of solving puzzles, working together, and completing challenges, which boosts their engagement and motivation. Here’s why gamified learning is a hit in the classroom:

  • Increases engagement: Students are naturally motivated by challenges and competition, making learning more interactive and exciting.
  • Enhances problem-solving skills: Escape rooms require students to use logic and critical thinking to solve clues and progress through tasks.
  • Encourages teamwork: As students collaborate, they practice communication and teamwork, skills essential for success in group settings.

**Perfect for Social Studies and Literacy Integration:**This escape room seamlessly integrates social studies content with reading comprehension, making it a powerful resource for interdisciplinary learning. While students strengthen their understanding of New York State geography, they’re also developing literacy skills by interpreting information, analyzing key details, and practicing vocabulary.

Whether you’re teaching about New York states borders, geography within the state itself, or just looking for a fun, engaging way to challenge your students, this New York State Escape Room is sure to captivate their attention while reinforcing key learning objectives.

New York State Geography Scavenger Hunt (No prep!)

By Miss Yous Clues and Resources

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on New York State Geography which is aligned with the 4th grade curriculum but would be helpful for grades 3-5 learning about New York State. Students will read about the lakes, rivers, mountain ranges, cities within NYS, the state capital, bordering states, countries and oceans. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code.

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!
