As our students are completing written assignments, little words/parts of speech that are commonly confused when writing with words such is, are, am, was, and were. My students are confusing them for each other continuously. The words is, are, am, was, and were are emphasized in this product. Students will determine if is, are, am, was, and were belong in each sentence, make up sentences using pictures, make up a short story/paragraph using is, are, am, was, and were, filling in the blanks, and circling the best verb be throughout the product.

Sentence diagramming is so helpful when teaching students parts of speech and sentence structure. The repetitiveness of diagramming for a bell ringer is extremely beneficial for students. In this product, students will learn the English vocabulary word for the different lunch and dinner food items presented. Students will initially write each vocabulary word in their native language and after learning the English word, students will complete different lunch and dinner food items vocabulary review where they will be required to fill in the English and their native language word for different lunch and dinner food items vocabulary word. I tend to use that section as a quiz. I will read the word aloud and the students will then write the English word and the word in their native language. Pictures are included for each vocabulary word to help students make connections with each lunch and dinner food item. Students can do this independently or with help. Students will be required to answer a few comprehension questions that relate with what is ordered when they go out to eat for lunch or dinner and what their favorite lunch or dinner food is.

Sentence diagramming is so helpful when teaching students parts of speech and sentence structure. The repetitiveness of diagramming for a bell ringer is extremely beneficial for students. I tried grammar workbooks for years, but my students hardly retained anything. Daily sentence diagramming made them remember their parts of speech, and was an amazing foundation for my students to have when we started forming different types of sentences. This technique provided my students a strong enough foundation to truly understand gerunds, participles, and infinitives!

How does it work?

"Let's eat Grandpa!" Your students' challenge is to find the missing comma from this sentence to save Grandpa from becoming dinner. In order to do this, they must complete 5 grammar-based tasks, discover a hidden message, and find clues along the way.

• Comma Drama: In the first task, students must identify comma rules used in 6 quotes about grammar. When matched correctly on a mat puzzle, shaded boxes reveal the first code.
• Idiomadness: In the second task, students must complete a crossword puzzle for which each clue is an education idiom. Shaded boxes within the puzzle reveal the code.
• Devil Cat: In the third task, students must closely read a passage about the Devil Cat that allegedly roams the basement of the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. and find the incorrect homophones within the article. Shaded letters within the answers form the third code.
• R U Kidding Me?: In the fourth task, students read 8 funny (well, in a Dad joke kind of way) jokes about grammar. Students must determine the part of speech of the underlined word in each joke. Shaded boxes within the answers reveal the code.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle that forms a quote about grammar. Once the puzzle is assembled and students bring the quote to you, they obtain the missing comma to save Grandpa!
