This 21-page resource with 24 primary sources, 24 comprehension questions plus 2 DBQ prompts gives students a chance to identify the tensions for women between tradition and progress in the 1920s, along with the new opportunites. The first page includes Background, Notes on Primary Sources and Teacher Notes.

Here’s a chance for students to read documents and look at images that shed light on issues facing women in the 1920s. These include newspaper pictures and articles about flappers, a flapper's own writing about her life, the Equal Rights Amendment, an argument against the E.R.A., pictures of women at work, data about women's work, women's recreation and leisure activities, the impact of consumerism and a study on life in the 1920s from the famous Middletown sociological study. There are, of course, so many more documents and issues of the 1920s such as the Red Scare and the Scopes trial but these documents cover a broad range of what women experienced. Many of the political events of the time still minimized, or even excluded, women's input although sometimes women provided reflections, opinions and even participation when possible. Nonetheless, the included primary sources highlight much of the modern advances and developments for women which stood in contrast to many of the traditional views and expectations that held sway in America at the time.

Assign just one, a few or all of the sources depending on time constraints and student interest.

Primary sources include letters, photos, newspaper articles, reports and other documents. Each page of primary sources includes comprehension questions at the end in order for students to analyze perspectives, consider key ideas and identify bias.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source.

Two DBQ prompts are included at the end with instructions on how to create a response to the prompt.

An Answer Key to all the comprehension questions and the DBQ prompts are available at the end of the packet.

This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.

An Amelia Earhart Escape Room activity. In Task 1 students will read an informational text about Amelia Earhart and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.

In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word.

In Task 3 students will have to cut out 27 timeline task cards about the 1900s before putting them in order from the earliest date to the most recent. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word.

In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.

Students can then complete their student answer key with the four words they revealed before checking with the teacher to see if they have escaped successfully.

This Figurative Language Short Passage Set about Rosa Parks is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Use it during Women's History Month or any time of the year! Featuring Rosa Parks, this is a 216-word passage filled with 15 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

What is a 90 Second Social Studies Assignment?

90 Second Social Studies Assignments introduce students to a large amount of information in a relatively short amount of time. One of the issues with student presentations is the transition time between student presenters. When the presentations are all on the same google slide, transitions become seamless. Women of the American Revolution Reading Assignment and Worksheet

This quick four-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides an overview of the various activities, attributes and activities of women during the Revolutionary Era. It works well as a Guided Reading activity or as an exercise for Reading Comprehension.

It covers the time period 1763, the end of the French and Indian War and through the American Revolution to 1783. Due to increasing pressures from Great Britain, colonists began to resist and women, for the first time, became involved on a political level as activists. Women's contributions will be highlighted during the Pre-Revolutionary Era (1763-776) and the Revolutionary War (1776-1783).

Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more about women's contributions. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.
