Students will create a reference checklist to use throughout the year to help with research when responding to compelling questions.

Students will read an informational text explaining how to research and why it is important to analyze the information found through research. They will also read how to present the information once it has been analyzed.

Using this information, students will create a checklist using a template and important points from the reading. They can complete this by cutting and pasting, handwriting, or completing a Google Slide activity.

Teachers can also opt to use the provided follow up questions to increase rigor. These questions can be used for early finishers, as a written assignment, or a starters for class discussions.

Each inference-based question can be treated as an extended response where students must make inferences and support their responses, ideas, and/or analysis with evidence from the text.

► There is a "combo" worksheet, which includes all five questions on two pages. There are also 5 separate worksheets that include the same questions on a different worksheet. This allows for more extensive responses. You can have students either complete all five inference-based questions on the "combo" worksheet all at once OR you can have students complete each of the questions at different times: for classwork, independent practice, homework, or formative assessment - your choice! You can even give students different questions depending on their levels - excellent for differentiation.

It takes between 4-6 periods to complete and is appropriate for grade 5-8. Please note: This assignment works best if you are able to access Apple Music. As a teacher, you could always set up a free account to show to your students or ask your students if any of them already have it and would be willing to show the class how it works. Spend some time and show them how to use it if you have access to it. You can also see some demos from the Apple website. If you do not subscribe to Apple Music, I highly recommend it. You can still use this assignment without Apple Music with your students and they can reflect on the inclusivity of the playlist that they create. TIPS: 1. Do you print out your student's writing and have them peer edit? Do you have students' correct sentences when teaching grammar? Then these are perfect for you. These are quick, easy editing marks students can use to correct writing or assist with grammar lessons. I print them out, number the back of them and laminate them.

I hand them out at the beginning of the year to keep in their writing binder. When we do Daily Language they use a red pen to edit the sentences and then rewrite the sentences correctly. When we peer edit I print their writing and they meet with a partner and peer edit each other's work using these correction marks.
