STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students. They will then read and analyze a mentor poem and utilize the same structure to write their poem. They will love creating their poems and watching their ideas come to life! This well-organized activity allows students to effortlessly become poets, while thinking about concise and precise word choice, counting syllables to create rhythm, getting exposure to high-quality examples, and learning something new! Summary:

Claude McKay, born Festus Claudius McKay in Sunny Ville, Jamaica in 1889, was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, a prominent literary movement of the 1920s. His work ranged from vernacular verse celebrating peasant life in Jamaica to poems that protested racial and economic inequities. His philosophically ambitious fiction, including tales of Black life in both Jamaica and America, addresses instinctual/intellectual duality, which McKay found central to the Black individual’s efforts to cope in a racist society.

1.      Same Picture Four Settings- Students are given a partial character drawing and asked to draw that character in four different settings. There are two ways to complete this assignment. I have provided a list of possible settings to draw out (students would pick these out of a hat/bowl, OR they could choose four from the list to use).

Dylan Thomas, a Welshman, was a reporter and prominent writer in the early 20th century. His most famous poem, "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night," was published in 1952, but his reputation was solidified years earlier. Thomas was in high demand for his animated readings, but debt and heavy drinking took their toll, and he died in New York City while on tour in 1953, at age 39. was a reporter and prominent writer in the early 20th century. His most famous poem, "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night," was published in 1952, but his reputation was solidified years earlier. Thomas' prose includes Under Milk Wood (1954) and A Child's Christmas in Wales (1955). This individual or group crossword puzzle activity uses 12 terminologies and optional word bank, as well as word bank with definitions handout, that include: Simile The boy ran as fast as the wind. Sentence uses “like” or “as” to make comparisons. Metaphor The construction worker is a prince. An implied comparison between two unlike beings or objects. Alliteration Casey cackled confidently.
