This creative Dragons & Castles Scene was designed to be printed and displayed as examples while you teach. Use this PDF file to display these beautiful images one-by-one on a large screen. For this assignment, I asked students to brainstorm a dragons & castle drawing inside their sketchbook. Foreground, middle ground, and background were emphasized throughout the 4–5-day unit. I asked students to lightly redraw the composition onto watercolor paper. I asked students to paint the larger areas first and paint the dragon and details last. I hope you and your kiddos love this! The unusual and creative designs of Novelty Architecture are immediately interesting to middle school students. This lesson is perfect for an introduction to engineering, design, CAD, careers, advertising/marketing or history.

After a class discussion about the examples in the PowerPoint (and/or the additional examples in the resources section), students design their own functional building that meets the criteria for novelty architecture. They explore some of the potential problems in designing a building of this type and have the opportunity to utilize their creative skills as they find a unique way to create a building that looks like the company’s product or service.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.
