Best Real Life Math Task for Data and Statistics - Outliers Mean Median IQR

By Daniel

A brilliant Real-Life activity that will cement the subject matter in a way that no normal classroom Math exercise can!

This 12-page task and key is a DIY alternative to repetitive and boring Data and Statistics tasks. Students will use measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion to make real life choices about planting certain crops or not, which sports team will win a game given the weight and height of the players, etc. The product improves students' understanding of the use of the following statistics:

  • mean
  • median
  • mode
  • range
  • quartile 1
  • quartile 3
  • Inter-Quartile Range
  • Lower Outlier
  • Higher Outlier

From 7th Grade math, I hardly teach these topics any more, since students know them well by now. I give them these tasks, and it takes them 2 to 3 days to complete.

You may also find these equally interesting, especially now with the Olympics!

Chance of Rain Card Game

By LittleStreams

A great end of year, seasonal game that still has educational merit. Suitable for all ages. This game is available in a 5 for 3 bundle. It is a game designed to explore probabilities, and how they change as time goes on. But can also be played just for fun as a way to develop strategic thinking. There are varied numbers of weather cards, and you use your knowledge of their probabilities to prepare yourself with items to go out in that weather. If a rain card is turned over, and you are prepared with an umbrella, well done! You keep your Item. But if a sunny card is turned over, and you have an umbrella, oh no! You lose your item. The winner is the last person to remain in the game at the very end. The game is playable in 2 different ways, independent and dependent probabilities, as defined by removing completely or returning and reshuffling the weather cards as you play. Both give great play experiences. We have already played this game with tutees, and they say it's our best game so far! Purchase it to find out why. It comes with easy-cut guides, full cheat sheets and probability tracking pages for players to keep track as cards are played and revealed. Makes for great fun, and powerful learning. This card game is also available in a bundle of 5 games for the price of 3. For savings, click here to see. Real-Life Math Fun!Pre-Algebra Quant Data, Evaluate Measures of Central Tendency

By Daniel

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students, and this is right up there with the most essential!

This data and statistics project is a fun practical, real-life way to analyze and compare data by making use of real-life data, statistics and plots like a box-and-whisker and a scatter plot. Refresh the concepts of mean, median, mode, range, 1st quartile, 3rd quartile, outliers, minimum, maximum by comparing how high and how far students in 2 different classes jumped.

This project is tried, tested and refined over many years in my own middle and high school classrooms. It breathes new life into topics that will be stale, boring and old if not done in a real-life way. Students will be able to debate and defend certain viewpoints using the data and their own analysis of it.

Data, Statistics, Box-and-Whisker Plot, Box Plot, Scatter Plot, Mean, Median, Mode, Range, Quartile 1, Quartile 3, Minimum, Maximum, Inter-Quartile Range, Outliers, Correlation, Positive Correlation, Negative Correlation, Correlation Coefficient, Line of best fit.

Real-Life Math Fun Activity! Practical Stats - Do tall students jump high?

By Daniel

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students, and this is right up there with the most essential!

Do tall students jump high and far? Do the same students jump high and far? Students collect their own quantitative data to answer these and other questions. The data collection does not take long. Afterwards, students calculate the measures of central tendency - mean, median, mode, Q1, Q3, min, max, range and upper and lower outliers (extremes). The handout (with complete answer key for the teacher) contains the formulas students need in order to do all calculations.

This project has been tried, tested and refined in my own middle and high school classes for many years.

Quantitative Data, Measures of Central Tendency, Mean, Median, Mode, Quartile 1, Quartile 3, Interquartile Range, Outliers, Extremes, Data, Project, Range, Minimum, Maximum.

You might also want to include these resources in the Series on Stats and Data!
