The Writing Process (Handout #1): This handout offers several tips about how to choose a topic for an analytical paper on literature. Encourage your students to use the writing process as an opportunity to deepen their knowledge about the text. (4 pages)

The Intro Paragraph: Hook & Thesis (Handout #2): In the first page of this handout, students learn to identify and formulate the interpretive questions which they will hope to answer or solve while writing their papers. The challenge of "problem construction" will present most high school students with the opportunity to develop a new and exciting skill — one that will serve them well in college and beyond. In the second and third pages of this handout, students learn to write thesis statements that balance complexity with clarity. They learn to use grammatical subordination in order to generate a main claim that is sufficiently complex to anchor an entire paper. (4 pages)

Body Paragraphs: Evidence & Analysis (Handout #3): In this handout, students learn about how "evidence" in the humanities differs from evidence in the sciences. Because evidence in the humanities is rarely factual or indisputable, student writers will always need to frame, unpack, and analyze their evidence. This handout offers several suggestions about how, as it were, to "make the evidence speak." It also offers strategies for how to organize evidence into a series of body paragraphs that build upon one another in a logical and compelling manner. (2 pages)

Topic Sentences / Transitional Sentences (Handout #4): This handout offers advice about how students can use transitional expressions to clarify the logical connections between the claims in each of their topic sentences. It includes a list of different types of transitional expressions along with several examples. (2 pages)

Precepts for Effective Prose (Handout #5): This handout features about a dozen precepts or "rules of thumb" that students should follow when writing academic papers. Below are the specific details for each individual session which can be used in isolation or as a comprehensive anger management curriculum.

1.Session 1: Welcome & Introduction to the Group In this session, students are introduced to the purpose of the group, setting the stage for a journey of self-discovery and growth. Expectations for the sessions ahead are discussed, creating a sense of belonging.

2.Session 2: What is Impulse Control? Students delve into the concept of impulse control, understanding why it's important and how it can positively impact their lives. This session lays the groundwork for the entire program.

3.Session 3: Our Remote Control - Pause/Think/Act Through interactive activities, participants learn the power of pausing before reacting impulsively. They explore the metaphor of a remote control for self-control and practice the essential skills of pausing, thinking, and acting mindfully.

4.Session 4: Coping Skills and Strategies Students are introduced to a toolkit of coping skills and strategies that empower them to navigate moments of impulsivity. These practical techniques equip participants to better handle challenging situations.

5.Session 5: Perspective Taking This session helps students develop empathy and perspective-taking abilities. Through activities and discussions, they learn to see situations from different viewpoints, enhancing their interpersonal skills.

6.Session 6: Choices and Consequences Participants explore the connection between choices and consequences, discovering that every action has an outcome. They gain insight into how making thoughtful choices can lead to positive results.

7.Session 7: Conflict Resolution In this interactive session, students learn constructive ways to resolve conflicts and disagreements. They practice communication skills that promote peaceful resolutions.

8.Session 8: Problem Solving Effective problem-solving techniques are introduced, empowering participants to address impulse-provoking issues in a constructive manner. The session emphasizes the importance of finding solutions to problems.

9.Session 9: In and Out of Your Control Students explore the concept of control and responsibility in impulse control. They gain clarity on what they can control versus what is beyond their control, helping them make informed decisions.

10.Session 10: Termination and Review In the final session, students reflect on their journey through the "Let's Pause" curriculum. They review key concepts and skills acquired, celebrating their growth and setting goals for continued impulse control success.

Need an awesome Art Unit? I have just the thing for you! This creative 2-Point Perspective City artwork was designed to be printed and displayed as examples while you teach. Use this Google Slide file to display these beautiful images one-by-one on a large screen. For this assignment, I did a demo and taught the class how to use a ruler and a yardstick. Measurements and Math were a strong focus of the lesson. Next, students spent the rest of the first lesson practicing the use of a ruler and a yardstick. I taught the students how to do 2-point perspective with step-by-step slides. Students started on their Final Copy paper and created their own version of my example. Students used colored pencils, colored sharpies, or watercolor paint to color their Mandala Design. I hope you and your kiddos love this! Enjoy.

Act Graphic Novel Comprehension Questions

The graphic novel, Act by Kayla Miller is great for children ages 8 - 14, as they can relate with the characters. My students enjoyed this book because it is a book about friendship, being mature, supporting your friends, being a good sport, leader, etc., and solving problems with friends and in life. This book does not have chapters, so comprehension questions were separated by pages. Therefore, written comprehension skills are emphasized while reading. At the end of this product, there are a variety of short answer writing prompts to choose from.

The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and a few example sentences are presented in the packet. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet.

Shakespearean Insult Generator: Shakespeare's characters are exceptionally creative in their elaboration of insults. Indeed, some scholars have suggested that the insults in Shakespeare's plays amount to their own education in wit. If your students are sufficiently mature, you could use this exercise to invite them to generate their own original Shakespearean insults. (2 pages)

Use this Google Slide file to display these beautiful images one-by-one on a large screen. For this assignment, I did a demo and taught the class how to use a ruler and a yardstick. Measurements and Math was a strong focus of the lesson. Next, students spent the rest of the first lesson brainstorming an idea for a stencil (¼ of their full Mandala Design. I taught the students how to rotate their stencil to get a Radial Design. Students started on their Final Copy paper and outlined their drawing in sharpie marker. We used large windows to trace our stencils on the final. Students used colored pencils, colored sharpies, or watercolor paint to color their Mandala Design. I hope you and your kiddos love this!   • Session 3: Anxiety Triggers This session deepens students' understanding of anxiety triggers. Through artistic expression and self-reflection, participants visually identify and express their unique triggers.
  • Session 4: My Panic Button The session explores the body's response to anxiety, including the anxiety and stress continuum. Participants differentiate between panic attacks and general anxiety while being introduced to anxiety-affirming techniques.
  • Session 5: Worries Brain Dump Students explore the concept of a worries brain dump, create their own brain dump craft, and engage in a visualization exercise to empower themselves to regain control over worries.
  • Session 6: Cognitive Triangle (Thoughts-Feelings-Actions) This session delves into the cognitive triangle, illustrating the interplay between thoughts, feelings, and actions in anxiety. Participants gain insights into thought patterns contributing to anxiety.
  • Session 7: The Power of Thoughts Students explore negative and unhelpful thought patterns, learning to challenge and reframe them. Hands-on activities reinforce mindful reframing techniques, empowering them to harness the power of thoughts.
  • Session 8: What's In and Out of My Control (Locus of Control) Participants gain clarity on the concept of locus of control, distinguishing what is within their control and what lies beyond it in anxiety-provoking situations, fostering a sense of empowerment.
  • Session 9: Choosing to Let Go This session encourages students to become pilots of their worries, distinguishing between helpful and unhelpful worries. The concept of emergency oxygen masks is introduced, emphasizing self-care strategies and the significance of letting go.
  • Session 10: Coping Strategies Participants explore helpful and unhelpful coping skills for managing stress and challenges. They create personal reference folders for coping strategies and engage in a coping skills relay, enhancing practical skills for stress management.
  • Session 11: Mindful Moments Students learn to cultivate mindfulness in the moment and various environments. Mindful breathing techniques and observation exercises are introduced, promoting presence and awareness in daily life.
  • Session 12: Stress Management This session addresses stress's impact on mental well-being and emphasizes the importance of self-care for recharging. Participants identify activities that recharge them and discuss self-care strategies to manage anxiety effectively.

Painting Art: Watercolor Boat Reflections. Fall/Autumn.

This creative Watercolor Boat Scene was designed to be printed and displayed as examples while you teach. Use this Google Slide file to display these beautiful images one-by-one on a large screen. For this assignment, I asked students to brainstorm a boat/vessel that they wanted to have in the water, and water kind of body of water they wanted in their artwork. We discussed Winslow Homer, and his style of art. Students sketched their drawing and painted the larger areas first. Students painted the boat, smaller details and reflections last. I hope you and your kiddos love this! Enjoy.
