You can decide if you want them to order from greatest to least or from least to greatest, or how about both for early finishers. Cut out cards and hang around the room. Have students take recording sheet on clipboard as they search for each "picture" and record their answer. You get 2 Sets of 12 cards. You can use each set at different times or pool them together for a larger set. Each set has a different colored border and it's own recording sheet. This Math Activity can be used many different ways to suit the needs of your class, here are a few ideas:

1. Math Around the Room – cut cards out individually and hang around the room, students take recording sheet on a clipboard around the room and copy problems then fill in the missing parts. (sometimes its great to let the students move about the room)

2. Math Station/Center – cut cards out and place in bucket at a center, students work in a small group at station choosing a card and recording problems and answers (sometimes they work better seated at a station)

French HALLOWEEN Cutie Pairs Writing Prompt

A terrific, no prep activity for your blossoming K-4 French writers who may be struggling to take risks with their writing skills. The students absolutely LOVE this activity and have been asking me for days when we get to do ‘le gateau et la crème glacée’. I gradually give students autonomy by giving them the freedom to talk about what they think the Food Pairs have in common.

What to do:

Make a class set of copies of one of the cutie pairs.

Students colour, write, and cut out the writing strip.

Finally, students cut and paste the ends of the writing strip to the back of each item in the pair. Fold in the middle and students can show the big reveal!

Halloween Sentence Stems

Use these 25 Halloween sentence stems / starters to get your students speaking or use them as writing prompts. These sentence starters fun at any level or age. Use these with primary or middle school students. I've included four completely different ways to use this resource. See the preview for more details.

Includes:

25 cards to print, cut out, and laminate: Use these no-prep speaking prompts year after year. This is a great way to enhance your program by practicing oral production during the month of October.

25 half page worksheets to use as writing prompts: These are meant for primary students as they include space to draw a picture and there is only space for a short paragraph. These are perfect for literacy centers.

25 full page worksheets to use as writing prompts: These are meant for middle school students. These prompts are a helpful way to "get started" when looking for something to write about.

25 sentence stem strips: Print and cut out the strips, punch holes in the spaces provided, and hook them together with a ring. Students can read the sentence stems and complete the sentences by using words they have learned to form the remainder of their sentences. Provide students with a set of stem strips that they can work on at their own pace. Unlike the writing prompts, these strips are meant to elicit short answers.

What’s the Mystery?

It’s Halloween in the spooky town of Mathigan, and something is terribly wrong with the candy being handed out. When the children eat it, they are transformed into real Halloween monsters! One of the town’s monsters has cursed the candy, and it's up to your students to solve the case. Using math skills, students will work through five clues to narrow down a list of ten suspects and discover who is behind the curse.

This mystery focuses on key place value skills aligned with 4th-grade standards:

• Finding the Value of a Digit in multi-digit numbers
• Comparing Multi-Digit Numbers to determine larger or smaller values
• Adding and Subtracting Multi-Digit Numbers with and without regrouping up to the hundred thousands
• Rounding Numbers up to the nearest hundred thousand

How It Works:

Students begin by reading the backstory of the cursed candy mystery, where they learn about the strange happenings in Mathigan and the list of 10 possible suspects, each with unique motives and magical items. Then, they solve math problems to unlock clues. Each correctly solved problem helps eliminate suspects from the list, bringing them closer to identifying the culprit behind the curse.
