2nd Grade en Français Resources

French Science of Reading STARTER KIT Activity Bundle is a combination of Science of Reading aligned activities that I have created, designed, and classroom tested to bring you the best of what's in store. Do you get tired of looking for French Immersion resources only to find that there is too much or not enough?

I have bundled 7 fantastic resources that can help set you up for group work, paper packets, and centre activities so you can quickly get your students started. And the best part? You can start any time in the school year!

What's in the Bundle?

1. Decodable Sentence Strips that are ideal for hands-on learning. Students use the resource in clear folders and write out the phonemes, decode, and write out the sentences all on their own

2. French Phoneme Activity pads are sheets to print out, insert into clear pockets (or laminate) and students form blended sounds using CV sounds available on the side. Students start with /a/ and blend each consonant by saying the sound, tapping the sound, mapping the sound, and writing the sound. Excellent early practice for those just getting started with the Science of Reading

3. French Phonics Alphabet activity sheets are designed to get that each sound of the alphabet familiarized and into the daily lexicon of each student. This can be used as a whole group instruction activity prior to being given out. The students could each get a booklet for doing each sound as the year progresses, for morning work packets, or this could be used for extension activities for early finishers.

4. Decodable Texts are the first set of texts that focus on early sound patterns for those setting out to learn the phonemes in French. A great way to start out for K-2 Immersion students that are just getting used to French sounds. These texts include a target sound, a few heart words, a small text, and comprehension questions.

5. French Phonics Screener is my most downloaded item in my store and this full version will take you from Kindergarten all the way to the Grade 2 level in French Immersion as it includes complex sounds, complex vowels, and all the blended sounds as well. A comprehensive screening tool that take a few minutes per students so you know right at the beginning of the year, where you need to focus your lesson planning!

6. Pyramid Reading Cards 1 are a set of early reading sounds that will get your students excited and motivated to embark on the world of reading. Each card has one repeating sentence that students get to practice from top to bottom. My students love to do these cards in pairs as they sit elbow to elbow, knee to knee to read to a buddy.

7. Large Phonics Flash Cards are a MUST in the Science of Reading classroom. Once your students are able to distinguish sounds, they are asking to put the grapheme to the phoneme! So here you go. Large print. Easy font. Easy print. The letters are positioned for easy stacking so you can hang on a ring and flip pages quickly. Students LOVE to be the Mini-prof when it's their turn to try to stump their classmates. Once you have the single sounds down, it's time to blend. Printing on different coloured paper and laminated will help cards to last year after year!

Who can use this resource:

What grade level:

I personally use these activities with 1st and 2nd Grade students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to them year after year with their students. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Flip Card decks are so handy for the classroom. I use them in small group work to assess and teach specific sounds, combinations of CV sounds, and to decode words together. The large format cards are great for my Grade 1 students as we can do a lot of whole class instruction and the students have so much fun coming up to the front of the class to come up with the 'really hard' CV combinations for their peers to read out loud.

Use the smaller sets for learning centres, individual work, and pair work as your students get familiar with their phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. My students happen to love 'testing' each other by flipping the cards, saying the sound, and then waiting as their 'students' write what they think is the correct letter on their whiteboards!

We love them so much as we can sneak in a little decoding and Science of Reading whenever we get a minute or two of time to fill.

Who can use this resource:

Any French educator who is wanting to practice, assess, and deepen their students understanding of sound work in French. This item is suitable for French Immersion, Core French, and French instruction at any level. Students in the Core French environment can benefit from using these sets independently for writing assignments and group activities. Immersion teachers will find these flip cards useful for any students from Grades 1 to 4 who need an extra boost to building a stronger phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. The French Phonics Mats are ideal for the K-2 French learner who is just starting to blend sounds in French. Use the NO PREP individual mat cards for centres, additional one-on-one resources for small group instruction, or for students with an IEP who engaged in strategies from the Science of Reading. Ideal for task bins as they can be interchanged daily or weekly depending on your student programming.

What to do:

1. Copy and laminate the sheets. Cut out individual task cards on the left and then Velcro mini dot Velcro to the back of each consonant card. Add a Velcro to the Phonics Mat.

Put the mats at a centre with a whiteboard marker and an eraser (I use socks from the Dollar Store…much cheaper and they last forever!)

2. You can also use this resource by simply laminating each sheet and using a whiteboard marker to make CV sound blends.

Science of Reading:

These cards are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven Phonics Mats on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple French Phonics Mats to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Phonics Mats are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

What grade level:

I personally use these mats with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. These reading passages following the theme "Mon restaurant préféré" include five separate reading activities for Monday through Friday with three comprehension questions each. These activities are perfect for core French or immersion programs.

These reading worksheets are a great way to practice themed vocabulary, see sight words in action, and to improve overall comprehension.

French Decodable activities that align with the Science of Reading in the K-2 French classroom. Students work on their phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, decoding and encoding skills and as they master the target sound.

Make a few copies of each card and insert into clear pockets to create a quick and easy reading centre; arrange a table with four copies to create a quiet reading group; use one-on-one with your students to assess reading levels, to gain insights to their decoding skills, encoding skills, and to inform your upcoming lesson plans. Students use whiteboard markers to sound out each sound in the word, each syllable, or each word in the sentence. What a great way to build confidence! J'ai... Qui a...? (I have... Who has...?)

This great French phonics game is a fantastic way to get your students talking. Students of every grade absolutely love this easy to use card game. The easy prep cards can be made in colour or black and white and can be used with words or without, depending on the level of French phonological awareness that they have acquired.

If they are only setting out in their French journey, try cards with no words and watch them get talking. With students that have been learning with the Science of Reading, decoding and blending are the next steps.

Once students have all the simple sounds (sons simples) in French, we start to introduce complex sounds (sons complexes). I usually teach OU first and then AN. This allows students to now be able to decode hundreds of words.

Activity Cards include:

-lowercase letter recognition

-identifying phonemes

-decoding simple and complex sounds
